Having just purchased spilanthes plants again [9/9/08], to make tinctures, I thought I would look up more uses. I know it's used for toothaches, however I wanted to know more.
Apparently it's antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, promotes growth of white blood cells, heals gums, candida, urinary tract infections.
Seems to be a great plant. Thrives in tropical climates, dies at frost. Propagates itself in rich, well drained soil by suckers. Keep moist. It is like echinacea in uses apparently, with that same numbing sensation when chewing a leaf or flower head. I've never tasted echinacea like this though. This stuff WILL numb your mouth, tooth, whatever. Lasts about 10 minutes. Our dog had great fun with it. Loved it, although he was salivating forEVER it seemed. He would eat it again and again though. [it was a MALE dog and he was blond, go figure ] lol
It promotes saliva production. Like...a LOT. Use a bit of tincture in a glass of water for a mouthwash, it's said to heal gums after several months.
It's said to grow to 24 inches tall. Check it out on the web. You'll find a lot of information.
